{"id":1168,"date":"2011-11-20T15:29:53","date_gmt":"2011-11-20T15:29:53","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/johnshepherd.me.uk\/?p=1168"},"modified":"2011-11-20T15:29:53","modified_gmt":"2011-11-20T15:29:53","slug":"ottery-st-mary","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/johnshepherd.me.uk\/?p=1168","title":{"rendered":"Ottery St Mary"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Another entry in my ongoing <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/calendarcustoms\">project<\/a> to film strange British customs&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"460\" height=\"300\" src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/7ewjaUcHVG0?rel=0\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>A traditional Dorset event in which the residents of Ottery St Mary take tar-filled barrels, soak them with paraffin, set them on fire, hoist them above their heads, and then charge through crowds of screaming drunk people. <\/p>\n<p>This continues until the barrel disintegrates&#8230; then they do it all over again, with progressively bigger barrels.
